Helping hands

"Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." Philippians 2:4

When a student dropped his pencil box and the contents scattered across the floor, the rest of the students continued to stand in line, not moving.  This was an opportunity to model what the above verse looks like in a kindergarten classroom.  I leaned over, started to help pick up the items, and said "We are here to help each other out."  As soon as the words came out of my mouth, two students joined in helping.  A smile appeared a moment later when another pencil box spilled open, and silently, without prompting, classmates joined in to help.

  1. Great post, but what's up with those defective pencil cases? No, but seriously, you showed your kids the behavior you expect and I'll bet the lesson sticks!

  2. It's funny, but when the middle schoolers help, it's always to gain recognition for themselves. BUT...I love helpers! It's just so nice! I always make sure to say something, because we do have to take care of each other. Jennifer Sniadecki
